Pearland Medical Center opens $8.5 million medical surgical unit
Pearland’s first hospital undergoes first expansion to meet growing demand for community healthcare services
Nov. 29, 2018 (Houston) – Pearland Medical Center, a HCA-affiliated hospital in Pearland, Texas, has opened a new medical surgical unit on its second floor. Six months in the making, the unit adds 14,380 square feet to the facility and increases its capacity by more than half with the addition of 23 total beds, including: 18 standard patient rooms, an isolation room, and a four-bed observation unit.
Opened in 2015, Pearland Medical Center was the first hospital in Texas’s fast-growing Pearland community and was designed to expand with the population, and thus, demand for hyper-local healthcare services. The hospital has been operating at capacity, and the new space is expected to improve patient experience by helping to ensure patients’ direct admission to a private room.
“We’re so thrilled to offer these improvements and additional capacity to the community,” said David Wagner, chief executive officer of Pearland Medical Center. “The plan was always to start small and to grow with Pearland, and that’s what we’re doing – these new beds will help us fulfill our mission of meeting patients’ needs for quality healthcare in their own backyards. No travel required.”
Pearland is the seventh fastest-growing city in the U.S., and the fastest-growing city in the Greater Houston area. While there aren’t definitive plans for additional construction, Pearland Medical Center is equipped to grow vertically in the future as demand continues to increase. The facility made eight hires to staff the new unit, and additional hires will be considered based on community needs.
“While as a hospital, providing quality care is always going to be our priority one, we’re also listening to patients and making adjustments to improve their experience while they’re here,” said Wagner. “We know patients have a choice when it comes to where they receive care, and improving our capacity to help ensure a bed for every patient is just one way we’re remaining competitive on this front.”
