    ACC Foundation Awards Grants and Honors Staff
    The Alvin Community College Foundation presented $40,807 in grants and awards at the annual Afternoon of Honor on April 30.
    The Innovative Initiative Grants are designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of Alvin Community College. The grants will be used for the 2019-20 academic year.
    More than $20,000 in funds were also awarded to Adopt-A-Grant programs to benefit student scholarships, the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival, the Upward Bound program, the music program and more.
    The ACC Foundation also presented faculty and staff members with the Foundation Excellence Awards which recognize college faculty and staff members. Winners this year are Institutional Support specialist Lori King and Institutional Effectiveness and Research associate Tammy Braswell. Each received $1,000.
    Innovative Initiative Grants were awarded to create a mental health outreach program, assist students with hardships, create a digital archive, purchase technology and more.
    The Foundation awarded a $2,000 grant  to help create a mental outreach program for students.
    A $2,000 was awarded to assist students facing hardships with graduating.
    To help raise awareness about mental health issues, a $1,000 grant was awarded to create an Active Minds Chapter at ACC.
    A $1,000 grant was issued to the Welding Department to adjust a forklift to simulate a crane.
    The Foundation awarded a $385 to help create an archive of the Alvin Sun newspaper.
    A $2,000 grant was awarded to the Skilled Training Rewarding Independence and Vocational Education (STRIVE) program to purchase tablets for its students for STEM education.
    The Foundation issued a $1,500 grant to create a podcast studio.
    A $2,000 grant was issued to purchase tablets for enhancing academic advising on campus.
    To keep pace with today’s technology, a $2,000 grant was awarded to help fund virtual reality training on campus.
    The ACC Foundation also presented grants that were part of the “Adopt a Grant” program. Guests at Foundation events such as the annual Gala were asked to support different projects with individual donations from $25 to $100.
    The departments to receive Adopt a Grant funds included the Music program to purchase outdoor speakers and for student scholarships, scholarships for students in the Communications program, Dual Enrollment scholarships, an emergency fund for students and staff, scholarships in the Welding program, the STRIVE program, the Upward Bound program to fund cultural events, the Upward Bound program, to fund the purchase of benches for the jogging trail, the Lab School for Snow Day, the ACC and Alvin ISD Food Drive and the 35th Summer Children’s Theatre Festival.
    A wine pull conducted at the 2018 Foundation Gala helped fund an Adopt-A-Grant to help students affected by Hurricane Harvey with textbooks and supplies.
    Many students and staff members continue to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The Foundation awarded $48,949 to the ACC Student and Staff Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
    The ACC Foundation’s work this past year has provided more than $123,907 to scholarship programs and staff development which will benefit the college now and in the future, President David Jircik said.
