The Leadership Pearland Class of 2012-2013 participated in their second series of events on Friday, October 12, which is part of a nine-month program designed to enhance and motivate their potential for civic leadership and commitment to the Pearland community. This all-day session of events, entitled “Your Leadership Does Make a Difference”, began with meeting the Pearland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and attending their monthly meeting, followed by meetings with staff of the Chamber, Destination Pearland, and Small Business Development Center, attending the Fall Thyme Luncheon hosted by Keep Pearland Beautiful, and visiting
successful businesses in the Pearland area.

Attendance at the Pearland Chamber of Commerce Board meeting allowed Leadership Pearland members to witness first-hand how Chamber decisions are made and how the Board and staff efforts promote an environment for trade and commerce and enhance economic growth for
its members and community. Following the Board meeting, the Leadership Pearland members met with Chamber of Commerce staff to learn about membership opportunities, activities and benefits. The Leadership Pearland class then heard from Cory Cart with Destination Pearland, who shared ongoing efforts in promoting tourism and recruiting major events to the local community.  The
last event of the morning was  a meeting with Gary Bucek, Business Consultant with the San Jacinto College Small Business Development Center, who discussed the program’s numerous training opportunities available  to people interested in starting or improving their small business.

The Leadership Pearland class then attended the 9th annual “Plant Thyme Fall Luncheon” hosted by Keep Pearland Beautiful, which raises significant funds through sponsorships from area businesses, organizations and individuals and proceeds from the silent auction.  Sherwin Sun, who is a member of the Leadership Pearland 2012-2013 Class, is the Executive Director of Keep Pearland Beautiful and did an excellent job hosting this annual fundraiser that assists with enhancing the community’s environment and the goal of making Pearland the cleanest most beautiful city in Texas.  The event speaker was Chet Garner, who is the creator and host of PBS’ Daytripper, which was designed to educate and inspire people to explore and appreciate the unique destinations throughout Texas.

The Leadership Pearland class ended their day visiting owners and staff with the following successful businesses in the Pearland community: Garner Coatings, ADDI Printing and Bredero Shaw.  Members learned about the history, services and operations of these area businesses as well as the benefits they have received from being a member of the Chamber.  Leadership Pearland members were also inspired as they heard the challenges and efforts resulting in the successes of these growing and established business in the Pearland area.

A special thanks to John Hundley, Best Coupon Magazine and a 2010 Graduate of Leadership Pearland for assisting with facilitation and safely chauffeuring the class from place to place.
