Participants tour City facilities and meet City Council & staff

    – Participants of a nine-month Pearland Chamber of Commerce program designed to motivate civic leadership and commitment to the Pearland community, learned how “Pearland Works” in their latest Leadership Pearland session.

The Chamber’s annual leadership class takes enrolled participants on various tours of area facilities focused on specific areas of the community. Last month, the class visited the Pearland Chamber of Commerce and toured local businesses. This month, the “How Pearland Works” session began with a tour of Pearland Fire Station 4 located at 8333 Freedom Drive, Pearland, Texas 77584.

“I had no idea of the collaboration between the Pearland Fire and EMS Departments. It’s amazing to see how the two agencies work together to save lives and keep residents safe,” said Laurie Rock, Leadership Pearland 2012-2013.

Following the tour of the fire station, Leadership Pearland classmates visited City facilities including: the Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Fire Marshal’s office, EMS and the Recreation Center & Natatorium. While touring the facilities, participants learned the functions of each and how they further the goals of the City.

“I was surprised by the amount of responsibility of the Parks & Recreation Department. From maintaining City facilities and mowing right-of-ways to hosting City events and managing the Recreation Center & Natatorium, Parks & Recreation plays an integral role in shaping the City,” said Kim Hocott, Leadership Pearland 2012-2013.

Another stop on the tour was the Animal Control & Adoption Center where one class member decided to consider adding another member to his family.

“After spending time at the Animal Control & Adoption Center, I’m considering adopting a pet. There are so many wonderful animals available for adoption that it makes sense to adopt and save an animal’s life,” said Sherwin Sun, Leadership Pearland 2012-2013.

In addition to City departments, Keep Pearland Beautiful was part of the half day tour. While visiting the Keep Pearland Beautiful office, participants learned what Pearland is doing to work towards a sustainable environment and how they can get involved.

Following the series of tours, Leadership Pearland members visited City Hall to meet with Capital Projects Director, Trent Epperson. Trent shared the role and vision of the Capital Projects and
    Engineering Department.

The session ended with a meet and greet of City of Pearland City Council members and participants attending a City Council meeting where they were formally introduced to City Council Meeting attendees.

Leadership Pearland 2010 class member Joshua Hari (Space Center Systems) graciously served as the tour guide for the day.

Members of the 2012-2013 Leadership Pearland class include: Ruben Almanza, Whitley Penn; Sparkle Anderson, City of Pearland; Butch Babineaux, CDM Smith; Melissa Black, Pearland Economic Development Corporation; Kim Hocott, Pearland Independent School District; Roy Mata, Bredero Shaw; Andrew Miller, Adult Reading Center, Inc; Laurie Rock, Altus Hospice Care; and Sherwin Sun, Keep Pearland Beautiful.
